In a press release, the District Collector, K. Rajamani has warned the citizens to abide the law and refrain from employing humans for cleaning septic tanks which is punishable under section 9.
Apart from certain exceptions where human intervention is unavoidable like changing the concrete closures, connecting new sceptic canal with the old one, taking the underground motor in wells and replacing the lids in septic canals.
"Even in such cases, for employing human prior permission should be sought. And, it is mandatory to ensure they wear safety gears", the release noted.
The Collector has warned all organisations and households to avoid employing human labour to clean septic tanks, which is an offense.
The Collector has ordered all Municipality and Corporation Commissioners, Thasildhar, Zonal Welfare officers and Panchayat Executive officers to keep a check, if all human and animal wastes are cleaned only using machines and no humans are involved.
"Those who go against the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation (Act and Rule) 2013 will be strictly punished and be jailed for 2 years and Rs. 10 lakhs of fine will be levied as a compensation for the victim or his family", said the District Collector K. Rajamani.
